In the center of the square is the Pyramid of May, a monument built in 1811 to celebrate the first anniversary of the Revolution, and renovated in 1856 by the artist and architect Prilidiano Pueyrredón. Between the Pyramid of May and the Government House, is located the monument to Manuel Belgrano, creator of the national flag.

Since 1954, "London City" was a refuge for poets, artists, politicians who traveled from the Municipal Palace to the Deliberative Council building, journalists who entered and left the neighboring building of the newspaper La Prensa and porteños and tourists who walked and worked along the beautiful Avenida de Mayo. Inside this place, the Argentine writer Julio Cortazar wrote his novel "Los Premios", which states on its first page "It was in the London of Peru and Avenida"...

    Palazzo Barolo was built by Italian architect Mario Palanti at the request of businessman Luigi Barolo. Both Palanti and Barolo were admirers of Dante Alighieri, so much so that the design of the palace was inspired by the Divine Comedy. The project was divided into three parts, corresponding to hell, purgatory and heaven in the work.

    The tour of the places in the city that were emblematic in Borges' life begins at the place where he was born, located at 840 Tucumán St. Although the house no longer exists, there is a plaque there to commemorate him. It continues through Plaza San Martín and the apartment at 994 Maipú St., 6° B, where he moved in 1944 and which was he residence for the following decades, as well as the neighboring Librería La Ciudad , which he frequented regularly. Nearby is the former headquarters of the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras , where Borges was a professor of English Literature from 1956 onwards.

    Ateneo Grand Splendid holds several records: it is the largest bookstore in South America, it was chosen by the British newspaper The Guardian as the second best bookstore in the world and the American magazine National Geographic named it the most beautiful. The bookstore was inaugurated on December 4, 2000, but the building preserves the old splendor and elegance of the Grand Splendid theater of the early 20th century: with its original railings, intact decoration and an imposing dome with frescoes, 20 meters in diameter. The motif chosen to decorate the "sky" of the place is a representation of peace, something very significant since it was made by Nazareno Orlandi in 1919.

    When it opened its doors as a terrace for a small cafe in 1850, it was named "La Veredita", but later changed its name to the Aeroclub bar, due to its popularity among the members of the nearby Civil Association of Argentine Pilots. La Biela acquired its current name in 1950, at the beginning of fashion motorsport, when it became a place of encounter for the races of champions of automobiles and for the lovers of that sport. Some of the details of the decoration are the old black and white photos of car racing champions. Behind the bar there are photographs taken by the Argentine writer Adolfo Bioy Casares, who was one of those who used to frequent the café with his friend writer Jorge Luis Borges, and who took these photographs to illustrate a book they wrote together. When tourists enter the traditional cafe, they can see Jorge Luis Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares figures seated at one of the tables located next to each other at the entrance door.

I took this tour with my spouse because I spent seven years studing latin american literature in college and afterwards. I really wanted to see and feel the parts of Buenos Aires where writers like Julio Cortazar and Jorge Louis Borges lived and worked and I wasn't disappointed! Neither of us was disappointed. In addition to the literary aspects of the tour. Our guide Miguel stopped at and showed us mainstream Buenos Aires attractions. This wasn't just a tour of places with an "artsy" background. Finally, and this is perhaps the best part of an amazing tour for a literary person like me, we stopped at the "oldest" bookstore on the planet. La liberaria de Avila. Any one with an interest in books, bookstores, and Buenos Aires history will love this specialized tour.

It is a tour in particular for people, who like literature a lot, I think it is not for anyone. For me it was excellent, since for many years now I have been studying Argentine Literature. This is a very complete tour, you will be able to fully know the main Argentine writers. Everything went perfect, thank you Mercedes for your excellent tour guide.
