This will be a journey through time, where you can learn a little more about the history of the Knights Templar, men who were simultaneously Knights, Warriors and Monks. ​The Templars played an important role in all the great eras and battles in Portugal, from the founding of the country with D. Afonso Henriques to the Discoveries. The headquarters of the Templars and, later, of the “Order of Christ” settled in Tomar, making this the Templar capital of Portugal and Spain and one of the most important in the medieval world. Expect to be guided by someone who likes to feel the wind and really feel nature. We're not history or geography buffs, so don't expect to be overwhelmed with loads of historical facts or political information.

    The castle of Almourol, located on a small island that was already inhabited at the time of the Roman occupation of the peninsula, from the 8th century, was occupied by the Muslims, who will have conquered it to the Visigoths. In the context of the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, Almourol was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques in 1129, who gave it to the Order of the Temple.

  • Igreja de Santa Maria dos Olivais, Tomar, Portugal
    The primitive church dates back to the twelfth century, under the command of D. Gualdim Pais, master of the Order of the Templars, to serve as a burial ground for the Freires. The present church corresponds to the XIII century, to the reign of D. Afonso III, instituted like the most emblematic work of the national Gothic architecture. His planimetric model served as an example for other religious temples, both cathedral and conventual from north to south.

    Located in the center of the city of Tomar, the Church of St. John the Baptist was originally built in the 17th century. XV, but rebuilt in the 19th century. XVI. In 1520, King D. Manuel elevated the Church to the Collegiate, thus assembling to integrate the chapels of the royal patron.

    The Convent of Christ, in Tomar, belonged to the Order of the Templars. We were in Lisbon for a week and went on four different tours. This was the best of all of them. A great itinerary and wonderful sites, very reasonably priced. Highly recommend.

Unique tour of many different Templar sites. It’s a long day but worth the time. Read some Templar history before going and you will enjoy it more.
