This private shore excursion in Patmos offers a unique opportunity to explore the Grotto of the Apocalypse. The frescoes adorning the left of the entrance vividly depict the miracles and travels of St. John the Evangelist, chronicled by Prochorus, a supposed disciple.
On the right side, another fresco captures St. John's legendary battle with the priest of Apollo in Patmos. The journey continues with a visit to the Monastery of St. John and the Chapel of the Virgin Mary. 12th-century frescoes, hidden beneath 17th-century coverings, were revealed by the earthquake of 1956, offering a glimpse into the island's rich history. Conclude your excursion with a leisurely walk through the narrow streets of Chora in Patmos before transfer you back to the ship

Cave of Apocalypse, Greece We arrive at the Cave of the Apocalypse. More specifically in the “Holy Cave of the Apocalypse”, which still exists, John the Evangelist spoke with God and He recited the holy book of Revelation that John recorded with the help of his student Prohoros. This book has caused admiration and awe among the faithful Christians who find it prophetic and come from the ends of the world to visit and worship this place.
After this memorable tour, you’ll embark the car for the short ride back to the port. 30 minutes
Monastery of St. John, Greece We continue our visit to the foot of the Monastery of St. John the Theologian. It looks like a Byzantine castle and was built like a fortress. Its presence is overwhelming. It was founded in 1088 by Ossios Christodoulos following a grant by the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I. Komnenos. The monastery’s walls are over 15 meters high, its length from north to south is 53 meters and from east to west 70 meters. It seems even larger when you stand at the entrance, noticing its thick walls and heavily reinforced door. 60 minutes
Simantiri Masnion, Greece Our journey concludes with a visit to the 300-year-old Simandris House, offering a glimpse into a rich collection of antiques and architecture. This residence presents a fascinating blend of Oriental tradition and Western fashion favored in the 19th century. 30 minutes
Chora Patmos, Greece Chora of Patmos is absolutely gorgeous. Every narrow street is a photoshoot in and of itself. Stroll through the winding cobbled streets of Chora and cobbled streets of this delightful little village which built according to the typical Aegean style mingle with the superb mansions & the snow-white chapels and the flowered courtyards which effectively surrounds the well-known Monastery of St John which doesn’t to have changed over the centuries. 60 minutes

This was supposed to be a “private tour” of religious highlights of Patmos and our guide was supposed to be there with a sign with our names. No one was there with a sign with our names and our driver couldn’t speak English and knew nothing about the places we went to. All he did was pick us up and drop us off at these places. We could have rented a taxi to do this instead of paying $600 for five is us. This was a joke and I’m requesting we be refunded.

In June, two friends and I traveled to Patmos mainly to see the Cave of the Apocalypse and St. John's Monastery. Through a web search, we found Nick Alafakis, a private tour guide in Patmos. He was the best! We contacted him months before the trip and he quickly and patiently replied, to my numerous inquiries about various options until we decided on the perfect plan to satisfy our wants for the tour.
Nick met us at our hotel to escort us to the Cave of the Apocalypse and then to St John's Monastery. When we asked, he was flexible, accommodating and willing to pick us up at an earlier time so we could attend the Mass at the Cave, giving a wonderful commentary along the way. Having a degree in Theology he was extremely knowledgeable to give the background and explanation to the two sites as well as as interesting information about the island. Attending the Mass in the Cave, hearing the beautiful voice of the cantor was most spiritual and peaceful.
Nickolas was a fantastic guide, incredibly knowledgeable. and a great storyteller. He patiently answered any questions we had and gave interesting explanation on the exhibits at St. John's Monastery. Even after a short tour, we felt as though we were friends. I would definitely recommend Nicolas Alafakis to anyone visiting Patmos. He was the best!
Our days at Patmos were a true joy. I hope to return.
