The family was excited to experience the bioluminescence expected to be present at Laguna Grande on December 20. The Kayak team was very professional and enthusiastic, where I asked one of the instructors how the weather condition would be to experience the viewing this evening... his response was it should be good as it was a new moon and cloud cover (that reflects the light pollution) was expected to clear up. We trek over to the lagoon, where a different tour guide/instructor explained the source of the light, dinoflaggelates, etc, etc, then mentioned, unfortunately, you will not be experiencing the bioluminescence since there have been heavy rains over the past number of weeks. Another instructor said (there were many instructors to ensure the group made it to the lake safely) the last time they saw anything was the 1st week of December! Uh, what?!!? This was after that first instructor shared this should be a good evening (apparently well knowing nothing had been seen for weeks). Here I am cupping the water in my hand looking for anything.
While we kayaked back, a different instructor said the last time they saw anything was the first week of November! While understandably nature can not be predictable, I believe it was completely disingenuous that apparently with rains being heavy, the tour should have simply made the tourists aware that it was highly unlikely to view any bioluminescence and offer a refund for the trip. Rather than raising false hope, especially the evening of our trip, that something would be visible. They should reoffer the tour once they know the bioluminescence would be visible (technology in this day and age is such that they probably could simply send a drone over to that area and see if present, and if so, move forward with the tour). The payment was for the viewing of the bioluminescence not a kayak tour in darkness. We would appreciate at least a partial refund for this experience.
