Our detailed interpretive tour of this amazing outback city starts with a visit to Mount Isa's iconic lookout with a commentary on the points of interest and it's discovery by John Campbell Miles in the early twenties. We look at the natural fauna of the area and traditional dwellings. We take a drive by of the original mine managers residence the heritage listed Casa Grande villa still in use today and discuss the mine and it's processes before getting a photo opportunity in front of the lead smelter and bore mill. We visit Mount Isa's train station only metres from the mine and the end of the line for "Progress and Prosper" as the rail line extension to Darwin never eventuated. Before heading back to Outback at Isa we visit Buchanan Park home to Mount Isa's world famous Rodeo, the biggest Rodeo in the southern hemisphere.

Really enjoyed our 2 1/4 hour mini-bus trip with driver/guide Phil this afternoon. Phil was entertaining and informative. In about 20 stops (including a toilet break at the railway station) we learnt fascinating tidbits about the town's history, past and present buildings, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, mining history and current lead and copper processing, air quality controls and even a bit of botany. Thanks a lot Phil!

We both enjoyed this glimpse into the mining history of Mount Isa. If we noticed anything missing it was that there was little reference to the history of the local 1st Nation peoples, this is pretty sad but we felt should be addressed in a respectful manner. Our guide was great and endeavoured to make our tour fun and informative.
