Quito, Quito, Ecuador Antisana is a stratovolcano of the northern Andes of Ecuador. It is the fourth highest volcano of the country (5.753 m - 18,874 ft), and is located 60 kilometers southeast from Quito. It is a perfect volcanic cone, compound by two volcanic cones; the oldest one was eroded by an old glacier. Your tour guide will pick you up at 7:00 a.m. from your hotel in Quito, and then we will drive you straight through the eastern mountain range, until the village of Pintag, where you start to drive uphill way to the Ecological Reserve! 5 minutes
Tambo Condor, Pintag, Ecuador At 3.810 meters (12,500 ft), you have big opportunities to spot very interesting fauna, like eagles, carunculated caracaras, white tail deer, foxes, and of course the majestic Andean Condor, considered the biggest flying bird of the world and one of the rarest species that probably had survived since the age of the mega beasts (10.000 years approx.)! 20 minutes
Antisana Ecological Reserve, Ecuador You will take a hike through the Andean slopes until the Mica Lake (4.050 m - 13,287 ft), product of the end of the last ice age; in order to have a better view of the volcano and to watch beautiful water birds like Andean lapwings, Andean gulls, Andean coots, Andean ducks, and black-faces ibis, that curiously live in Chile and only in the Antisana Volcano in Ecuador! 60 minutes
Antisana Ecological Reserve, Ecuador After your unbelievable experience in the best condor's territory in Ecuador, you will drive again back downhill way to the Isco canyon, where the nests and cliffs, where condors sleep, are! Enjoying more views of these spectacular birds, we will have a traditional and tasty lunch at a local restaurant. 120 minutes

My second day with the fabulous Myriam, who is a wonderful guide, has amazing English and really knows her stuff. Today the target was condors. Given there are only 130 left in Ecuador, I knew there was a chance i wouldn’t see one, but we saw 10!!! Also several other amazing birds. Another excellent day and Myriam was also aware of the altitude and that I had some issues in Quito, so she kept a close eye on me, asking about symptoms. I felt very safe in her hands. Well worth a visit to this amazingly beautiful place.

What an incredible day. Luis picked me up at my hotel and off we went up to the nearly empty national park where it felt like we were the only two people in the area. Along the way we were fortunate to spot not one but 10 (!!) condors soaring and playing together. Given that there are approximately 100 birds total in existence, we saw a remarkable 10% of them. It was breathtaking to watch them - especially when they swooped down close to us. We continued up to the park with stops along the way to spot seedeaters, flowerpiercers, caracaras, black-faced ibises, tyrants, variable hawks, and an abundance of deer. Once in the park, we hiked up to about 13000ft and the mountain came out of the clouds for most of our time there providing incredible views. On the way back, we stopped for a lovely typical Ecuadorean lunch at a small local restaurant, where the hummingbirds were out in full force. Luis was an excellent guide with deep knowledge of the area and its inhabitants - and a great sense of humor - and I felt very lucky to have him as my teacher. It could not have been a better day and I highly recommend this excursion.
