    Pick-up from your hotel at 6:00 am. This trip will take you through a great scenery in the Ecuadorian Andes. Visit Hacienda Antisanilla – Chakana Reserve, a 7,000-acre conservation land to safeguard Ecuador’s most important population of Andean Condors. The altitudinal range covered is from 10.000 to 12.000 ft asl . We'll spend the entire day in the area, watching for Andean condors (should be easy!) and other beautiful birds like the Ecuadorian Hillstar feeding on unique flowers of the Chuquiraga shrub, we even have to keep our eyes open for Spectacled Bears. The paramo is rich in important food sources for the bears’ mostly herbivorous diet; The Andean Bear's main food source in the area is a type of ground paramo bromeliad Puya sp. which is pretty abundant in this ecosystem and has a sweet juice heart. The area has a road system and trails of varying difficulty, allowing you to cover big extensions of territory in a short period of time.

    After exploring the reserve you’ll have a well deserved break and lunch at Tambocondor where you can also observe different species of hummingbirds like the Giant Hummingbird, Shining Sunbeam, Black-tailed Trainbearer and other species at the surrounding native flora and feeders. Our guide Santiago is an encyclopedia of knowledge regarding Ecuadorian/South American wildlife. After stopping at a local bakery en route to the reserve we were fortunate to come across an Andean bear enjoying a bromeliad for breakfast on our drive into the reserve which Santiago spotted across the hillside and setup a spotting lens for us to watch and take photos with. We then took a short walk to a secluded cliff top perch to watch hummingbirds and wait for the condors. It looked like the condors were in a different spot that morning, however, just as we started the walk back to the car 4 of them swooped overhead and we were able to get some great eye level shots of them soaring atop the canyon. We also saw a number of other birds and animals including an Andean fox. Lunch was at another local place where you could watch more hummingbirds whilst eating a delicious lunch. All in all an unbelievable day and will definitely be using Neotropical for future adventures!

Santiago was an incredible guide on our trip to Chakana and Antisana National Park. Our priority was to see Spectacled Bears and Santiago knew an area where a female and two cubs had been regularly sighted. We drove and walked straight to the largest Condor roost in Ecuador and, whilst surrounded by soaring condors, were able to observe the bears feeding and playing on the opposite side of the gorge for around 20 minutes. A truly magical experience! We spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon birding Chakana and Antisana - highlights included Ecuadorian Hillstar, Andean Ibis, Andean Gull and Great Horned Owl among many others. We had a delicious and reasonably priced lunch at Tambo Condor and enjoyed hummingbird feeders frequented by Shining Sunbeam, Tyrian Metal tail and the enormous Giant Hummingbird before making our way back to Quito mid afternoon. Santiago knowledge and passion made the day an unforgettable one.
