From the very beginning, the Gallery was conceived as a large boardroom, which was to celebrate the victory of the Christian fleet over the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. The commander of the Papal fleet, Marcantonio II Colonna, is depicted numerous times throughout the vault of the Great Hall of the Gallery and in the Room of the Battle Column.
The Gallery includes works by Lorenzo Monaco, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Palma the Elder, Salviati, Bronzino, Tintoretto, Pietro da Cortona, Annibale Carracci (painting of The Beaneater), Guercino, Francesco Albani, Muziano and Guido Reni. Ceiling frescoes by Filippo Gherardi, Giovanni Coli, Sebastiano Ricci, and Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari celebrate the role of Marcantonio II Colonna in the battle of Lepanto (1571).

We showed up for our tour that we pre-booked via TripAdvisor . Looked for the ticket office with no luck. Then went to the only ticket window outside the gallery. They had no tickets on hold for us. So we had to purchase tickets again. The gallery staff told us this happened to two other couples that day. Just buy your tickets at the official gallery. Now we’re out $55.00!! the Company Name is Weekend in Italy.

Molte opere d'arte e un palazzo pieno di storia con un giardino carino, il giro completo si fa in un ora e mezza, però il prezzo è eccessivo e le indicazioni sono scarse.

We missed this tour because of very poor instructions from the booking company as to when to meet, where, and how. By the time we realized this, it was too late and it was closed. Fortunately, we found another company to book this for us at a time that we could still go, and it’s instructions we’re much clearer as to what to do when. This was with Tiqets that we recommend over the company that viator is currently using for this attraction.
We always double-check the availability with our local partners for each booking. Even though this is usually a swift process, it can take up to 24 hours.
