Tiber Island, 00186 Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Italy The tour finishes on the Tiber Island. This location between the ghetto and Trastevere is a perfect location to find a meal in either neighborhood and also accessible to the busses that run along the river Lungotevere.

    We will begin at Trajan's Column and see Piazza Venezia before walking up the gently sloping steps to Piazza del Campidoglio to see the marvelous design of the square that was all imagined by the great Michelangelo, and now home to the famous Capitoline Museums.

  • Teatro di Marcello, Rome, Italy
    From here we walk to the Theater of Marcellus, often jokingly referred to as the little Colosseum. Though architecturally similar to the Colosseum, the Theatre of Marcellus is slightly older, dating all the way back to 12BC and it did not house any of the blood sports, and now is home to a few lucky residents who live in the apartments above the theater.

  • Fontana delle Tartarughe, Rome, Italy
    On our walk we will see the many restaurants in the neighborhood and stop for a taste of traditional Kosher gelato. Then we will have a short walk to the magnificent Fontana delle Tartarughe (The Turtle Fountain), a true masterpiece of the late Italian Renaissance, where you will discover how it was famously constructed in just one day.

  • Tempio Maggiore di Roma, Rome, Italy
    Constructed in 1555, this is the oldest Jewish Ghetto. The pope revoked all rights granted to the Roman Jews, and barred them from all types of trade and the ability to own real estate. In spite of this, the Jewish community thrived inside developing business trade, a unique and wonderful cuisine inside their walls and even their own dialect of Italian. The Great Synagogue, still the third largest in Europe, functions today as a place of prayer and a vital cultural reference point for the entire Jewish community of Rome.

  • Via Portico d'Ottavia, Rome, Italy
    From here it is a very short walk to the Porticus Octaviae, an enormous structure built by the emperor Augustus in honor of his sister Octavia. From the 15th to early 20th century it was the home to Rome’s fish market. It is from here that we enter the Ghetto itself.

  • Isola Tiberina, Rome, Italy
    Concluding at Tiber Island where past and present slip seamlessly into one, the island was used by the ancient Romans as a hospital with the river helping them as a natural barrier aiding to stop the spread of disease, and one of Rome’s best hospitals can still be found on that site today. Giving a beautiful view of the river, the island is conveniently placed between the Ghetto and the local neighborhood of Trastevere and is well connected to get back to any part of the city.

Tour guide Brian, the complete guide informative, put the whole group at ease from the start, an "in-depth but quick" chat capturing the history of how the Jewish people arose in Rome, and the story of how they lived and worked among gentile Romans and the struggles then they faced when the laws changed. The tour moved effortlessly though the city with informative stops along the way, explaining more history with tasteful moments of humour. Entering the Jewish Ghetto already prepped with the mental pictures of how the hustle of the area would have been in its hey day, and the sorry mental images of the how the dark times would have looked. Finally embarking on the medicine island with amazing story of the hospital and it's courageous doctor that saved lives during WWii. Throughly enjoyable informative afternoon, would highly recommend, well done Brian, thanks for the ice cream. ????

Great walking tour with a very knowledgeable guide. We ended our tour by going through the Jewish mseum and eating lunch on our own .

This was our favorite part of our trip to Rome. Our guide, James, was informed and witty, the history was amazing, and the sites were beautiful. Absolutely do this tour if you want a brief overview of Rome and a deep appreciation of Roman-Jewish history. To go into a bit more depth; we did this tour alone, the other group canceled. Even so, it was never awkward. James was very attentive and answered all our questions. When we began, he asked us about our knowledge of Rome's history and gave us a little history to give context for the sites we would see, and as we traveled through the Ghetto, he pointed out details we would have never noticed ourselves. The history was haunting but important to Rome's history. We saw places where beautiful and terrible things happened, but it was an amazing experience. At the end, he gave us some food recommendations and a couple of tourist spots.
