This is one of 4 VIP/deluxe tours we took during our 1 week stay in the Los Angeles area (+ we will review the Sheraton Universal Hotel). The trips were:
Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights RIP Experience (this tour)
Universal Studios Hollywood VIP Tour
Paramount Studios VIP Tour
Warner Brothers Studio Deluxe Tour
Please look for our review of each. We will rate each aspect of the tour A-F like in USA schools.
For those who do not know, Universal Hollywood has a separately ticketed event in the evenings late September through October. They have many (this year 9) "Houses" (used to be called "mazes") where you walk through horror filmed themed mazes with various evil and horrific characters are posed in motion and human-manned scenes from the respective movies. The entire park is Halloween-themed and walking evil clowns walking on stilts, roaming trolls and monsters, etc. etc. Many have electric "chainsaw" props and do a LOT of jump-scares. Read about it at the Universal Hollywood web site for more details.
We did this same tour about 6 years ago but the guide was so fast I just could not keep up and rather than slow her speed she just left us behind (you do not want to know how we would have graded THAT one). I mentioned this experience to Jessica and she promised she would keep our group together and pace appropriately. She kept her promise and for that we are grateful.
When the evening started (6 PM) we started down to the lower lot where we saw the first several houses as well as rode the Transformers, Jurassic World and Mummy attractions. Note in almost all the houses and many of the attractions there are special RIP Tour entrances which are in front of the Express Pass entrances which is cool. Note that RIP gets you into a VIP area in all the bars, which if you are into that is a Big Deal.
We then went back to the Main Lot and did a few more houses before the meal. The meal was pretty much the same as the VIP Experience Meal (which is great because 6 years ago the RIP meal was not very good). There was a cash bar available to purchase drinks (6 years ago they gave us 2 free drink coupons for beer/win so some minus points for that removal). The buffet includes fish, fried and baked chicken, salad bar type things, fresh sliced prime rib and a number of Halloween-themed desserts which were great. They had decaf and regular coffee urns which was great as it is evening and a little on the cool side. The meal break was a little over an hour which is exactly enough time.
We headed back out together and boarded the smaller RIP Terror Tram where we went through some attractions set up for the tram and got to walk through the downed 747 War of the Worlds set they always do up for HHN. One thing that is great is a special RIP front of the line photo in front of the house from Pyscho with "Norman" - a great treat! The Horror Tram dropped us off not too far from the Main Lot.
We then did some more houses the Harry Potter Forbidden Journey ride, which as a general rule is not suggested to do soon after eating as you go upside down at one point (not a problem for us). We together finished all the rest houses by around 11 PM. We were tired but had seen EVERY house and most of the open attractions. Now, the park stays open until 2 AM so if you have the energy you can continue to enjoy your RIP privileges (including front of the front of the line and special entry into the bars) until they close the place. If we were younger with more energy we would have loved to do that so please do if you can!
Having done the HHN for the last 15+ years (always FOTL/Express Pass) we strongly suggest if you can afford it to do the RIP. You do not need to plan anything and will see everything in a way you cannot even with Express Pass. A note: We took a pic of the wait times on our way out. It looks like 690 (11.5 hours) minutes for the houses and 320 (5+ hours) for the attractions. Total of 16,5+ hours of waiting when there is only 4 hours left. If you won't get RIP, always invest in Express Pass (which we have done for all these years)!
