    The walk will take us 50 minutes going up and another 50 minutes going down. The highest peak of the mountain is known as the nose and from there we can observe the beauty of the sunrise and the magic of the sun rising over the mountains. We will stay in this beautiful place for approximately one hour and 10 minutes where we will learn a little about the towns. that surround the beautiful Lake Atitlán, the history of the lake and we will learn about the volcanoes of Lake Atitlán and some volcanoes in Antigua Guatemala from afar.

Victor was a wonderful guide and safely led us up the mountain for a beautiful sunrise. He shared useful information about the volcanos, Lake Atitlán, and the vegetation we were passing along the way. I highly recommend this experience!

My boyfriend and I loved the sunrise tour! Edvin was our tour guide and met us in San Marcos to start our journey. Coordinating with Victor and Edvin via WhatsApp before the trip was very easy. The hike in the dark was fun but still challenging for us since we needed to adjust to the altitude. We were rewarded with an incredible view at the top! It was a hazy cloudy day, but watching the clouds roll through was just as beautiful. There was also coffee, hot chocolate and bread given to everyone. There are quite a lot of other big tour groups at the top, so we were very glad to be on a private tour so we could be on our own time and enjoy as long as we wanted. Edvin was great and gave us a little history about Lake Atitlan and the villages. He even took the time to take some awesome photos and videos of us! Highly recommend this tour!

Our group was 2 adults and 2 young teens, all decent hikers. We didn’t want to wake up early for the sunrise. 9am start was good for us. We would have been okay with a bigger group tour if available but only had private tour as option we could find. We didn’t want to hike the full distance (several hours?) from San Juan and instead elected the option for the van from San Pedro to Santa Clara. Then just a 45 minute hike to the peak / “nose”. We hired our guide for a few main reasons: a. Security, to minimize potential danger. b. Bring us on the correct path as there is plenty of opportunity for wrong turns. c. eliminate hidden fees charged by locals en route. I contacted and expected Vic, but he assigned us to another guide. Our guide Juan Diego was very prompt, flexible for our tardiness, informative, and thoughtful in bringing fruit snacks and water - and even a souvenir for us each. Plus a great route video as well which is very cool. He even ran ahead when the naughty kids got too far ahead of us, to make sure they didn’t get lost. Not part of his job, but we appreciate it. He did not seem to speak English strongly but we appreciated practicing Spanish. We experienced the benefit of knowledgeable guide with clarity on which fork to take several times. We passed friendly locals working their land with zero issues in terms of “tolls” or “fees.” That was all handled by Juan Diego as part of our included fees including with the local at the top. Some things to be aware of and be clear on before booking: 1. Who is the guide, and are they local (ie speaking the nearest Mayan language, which is handy when encountering locals)? 2. Does the guide speak English or whatever language important for you? 3. which parts at the top do you want to go to: we elected for the “nose” only but there is another place below “mouth.” 4. Do you want to see the sunrise and awake at 3am? (Not us!). 5. Do you want to go in the evening and camp at the top instead of hiking at 3am to see the sunrise? 6. Do you want the guide to keep photos of your group on his phone and maybe for promotion? We preferred not. 7 What difficulty level fits for your group and is altitude an important factor? I got very winded in the steepest last 30 minutes which is probably 80% out of shape but I suspect maybe a portion due to some bit of altitude. 8. Do you want the round trip hike to be 1.5 hours (drive to Santa Clara to start) or 6+ hours (hike from San Juan)? 9. What’s included and not included? 10. What’s the price and is it reasonable? In my view $50 per adult and $40 per teen is quite expensive even for a private tour. I believe there is a lot of room for competition. Having said that, in all, we recommend this tour for its fantastic view and great care by Juan Diego and the driver Tomas.
