Views were nice, but only saw a glimpse of whale. Too crowded to get go look, good luck to the short people.

Very disappointing day on the Clipper whale watching tour. While I completely understand that no tour can actually "guarantee" that you will find wildlife where you want, I feel that the effort made by this captain and crew showed a complete lack of effort or give a *^&%.
When we started off this morning the captain told us that because it was foggy up north towards the San Juans, we were headed down south Puget Sound where they had supposedly been told by colleagues the whales were spotted. We headed down and saw a couple of sea lions resting on a buoy, fun sighting. Keeping on down to and past the bridge at Tacoma all the naturalist could focus on was Malachi the humpback whale, who she again was told by colleagues was in the area. We then spent the next 2 hours looking for Malachi in roughly the same area. No orcas, no minke, no humpbacks.
After a long while of looking for Malachi and seeing other porpoises and sea lions
(really fun to see) the captain told us at 1:30 that unfortunately the whales (aka Malachi) were not cooperating today and rather than complete the tour and look for other wildlife, he would scurry us back to the dock by 2:40 so we could have the rest of the afternoon to ourselves. The tour should have had us back at the dock at 4:30 and I'm pretty sure that everyone on the boat would have preferred to spend the afternoon on the boat looking for ANY wildlife instead of "having it to themselves."
Did I mention that the "locally sourced food" on the menu - sandwiches, hot dogs, even potato chips- sold out at 11:45? Or that they rent binoculars? Not that we would have known until we read that it was time to return them on the tv screen at the very end of the trip, and not that it mattered since there was nothing to see. Or that at least 8 seats were double booked to customers?
We did get the promised rainchecks due to the absence of whales (cheap and easy consolation since they know that most customers are from out of state or country) we will not be using them should we return to Seattle by September 30, 2023. If anyone wants to bother with this outfit I'd be happy to share them - but you've been warned!
We always double-check the availability with our local partners for each booking. Even though this is usually a swift process, it can take up to 24 hours. Once this process is completed you will receive your voucher or ticket by email. If our local partner is not able to confirm your booking we will offer you the best possible alternative. If the new date and/or time doesn’t fit your itinerary, we will reimburse the full amount paid.
