We tasted some amazing and unique German foods. The tour ended in a Biergarten, which is always fun.

Our guide, Dania, was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and fun . Skip breakfast as there is plenty of food. We had a small group. Not too much walking. Interesting variation of foods to try. We really enjoyed the tour and would recommend this as a great way to get to know Berlin through its food history.

The tour we took should have been called the “Junk Food Tour of Berlin”, because there were no revealed secrets and the food was mostly unhealthful. Moreover, the guide, a nice young woman on the job just a few months and not at all a “local” as advertised, did not know much about the history, culture, or neighborhoods she marched us through wordlessly and so quickly that we had a hard time keeping up. She also had a thick foreign accent (not German) and spoke so softly and quickly we missed much of what she did say. She also seemed not to know how to speak to a group of 12, often turning her back to speak to some while the rest of us behind her could hear nothing. Worst of all, though, was that we did not experience what others have: there was no Berlin Wall, schnitzel, or cheesecake, for instance. And at the one stop in which something quasi-healthful was offered, I was unable to eat the item because it contained an ingredient to which I am allergic. She chastised me in front of others for not telling her in advance and then (before I could share mine with my partner), she snatched it and said she was giving mine to a homeless person. I might’ve been fine with that gesture were it suggested in a less rude way. The stops we made foodwise were generally uninspiring, and I say this as a person who was raised in a German family well-acquainted with traditional fare. (Even the spaetzle was bastardized.) In a donut shop, there were bugs all over the food items yet they served them anyway. See photo for proof. In another, we were not consulted on the degree of condiment we may like, so the currywurst was literally drowning in ketchup – we threw most of ours away.
As she got closer to the time she needed to lead her next tour, her pace became even faster, though it was 86 degrees and there was no water provided (we bought our own at the start of the tour but needed much more in the heat). We mostly saw her backside as she marched us from place to place. Even the few cultural sites were promoted as “I like this because it’s cute” or “I suspect the inside is beautiful because the outside is” (clearly she’s never been inside). By the time the tour was over – she left us in the final destination while she hurried off to her next gig – I was so sick that the rest of our day was ruined and I had to go back to the hotel to go to bed. Oh, and one more thing: twice she told us to write a review only if it is “positive”. When she asked which food item was my favorite, I said as tactfully as possible that I wasn’t crazy about any of it. She responded defensively that she’s not the one who chooses the locations. I know that this tour seems to generate a lot of positive comments, but they clearly had a different tour than we did. We have taken food tours all over the world and have loved every other one we’ve tried. This is the standout exception and makes us wish we could have our $95 back. Barring that, we felt it our duty to at least warn others.
We always double-check the availability with our local partners for each booking. Even though this is usually a swift process, it can take up to 24 hours. Once this process is completed you will receive your voucher or ticket by email. If our local partner is not able to confirm your booking we will offer you the best possible alternative. If the new date and/or time doesn’t fit your itinerary, we will reimburse the full amount paid.
