DMZ, Paju, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea What is the DMZ in Korea?
The Korean Demilitarized Zone is where North and South Korea come together to form the most heavily-fortified border on the planet. DMZ Korea is the most unique destination in the country and one of the most fascinating places to see in the entire world. Curious travellers from all over the globe flock to experience this mysterious destination, hoping to gain an insider understanding of North Korea – the world’s most secretive country. Rated the number one tourist activity in the nation, the DMZ in Korea offers a deep dive into history, politics, and the Korean War. 60 minutes
Imjingak Pyeonghoa-Nuri Park, Paju, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea The acronym “DMZ” means Demilitarized Zone. As its name suggests, it is a buffer zone between North and South Korea where no military personnel, installations or activities are allowed. It is also often regarded as a stretch of no man’s land and is roughly 4 KM wide. Its purpose is to preserve the peace between both sides and avoid military confrontations. The only exception to this rule is the Joint Security Area (JSA), where troops from both sides secure an area for peaceful talks and negotiation between the leaders. The best way to think of the DMZ is as a neutral ground where the North and South can communicate. 60 minutes
South Korea, Gyeonggi-do, Paju-si, Munsan-eup, Imjingak-ro, 177 깅기도 파주시 Mangbaedan Here, you will find Mangbaedan altar. This is where refugees bow to their ancestors as it looks in the direction of the graveyard. The tradition happens on Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving). 30 minutes
Dora Observatory, Paju, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea Use the high powered binoculars on the third floor for extra precision. You will be able to see the North’s propaganda village located right inside the DMZ and see as far as Gaesong, the ninth-largest city in North Korea. If you’re lucky to be here on a clear day, you’ll get to see the bronze statue of Kim Il-sung, too! 40 minutes
The Third Tunnel, Paju, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea A stop not to be missed on our itinerary is the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel. Located 12 kilometres away from Munsan and 52 from Seoul, the tunnel was discovered in 1978.
Its purpose was to be used to invade the south. At 1,635 meters long, 2 meters high and 2 wide, the tunnel has the capacity of moving an entire division per hour!
The curious fact here is that when the tunnel was discovered, North Korea alleged that the south had built it for a surprise attack, but evidence points to the contrary. Walking through will feel like you’ve stepped back in time! If you aren’t comfortable with closed spaces, you’re welcome to wait by the exit. 60 minutes
