The walled village of Monsaraz is located atop a hill overlooking the Guadiana River and the modern Spanish border. Archaeological evidence indicates that the village has been fortified, in some form, since prehistory – understandable given its important location. The picturesque town boasts historic monuments, traditional homes, restaurants, and a few shops. Particularly notable is the Castle of Monsaraz, built by the Portuguese King Dinis in the 14th century. Join us on this tour to discover the enchanting medieval village and castle of Monsaraz. We’ll start by picking up everyone at the Roman Temple in Évora, then embark on a scenic 45-minute drive to the historic village of Monsaraz. Your tour guides are trained archaeologists and look forward to showing you some spectacular monuments from Portugal's past. Please note that pick-up time will vary according to how many groups are booked on a single tour. If you choose the hotel pick-up option, your pick-up time may be as much as 30 minutes prior to the tour start time. When you have made your booking, please specify the hotel you would like to be picked up from. We will let let you know what time you should be ready in your hotel lobby at least 24 hours prior to the tour. You will be greeted by your Tour Guide outside of your hotel.

Children under the age of 12 or under 1.5 meters in height are required to sit in the back seat of the vehicle in a child car seat or booster that is appropriate to their size. We do not provide car seats, so please remember to bring your own.

We’ll start by picking up everyone at the Roman Temple in Évora, then embark on a scenic 50-minute drive to the historic village of Monsaraz. Upon reaching Monsaraz, we’ll embark on a leisurely stroll through the charming village, granting you the chance to capture memorable photos and wander through its alluring narrow lanes. Visit to the interiors of the town's churches, small Fresco Museum, and the House of Inquisition are not included in the tour due to uncertainty regarding their hours, especially off-season. However, we will give visitors some free-time to explore these on their own should they wish.

    Our next stop will be the magnificent Monsaraz Castle, where you’ll delve deeper into the history of the village. Afterwards, you’ll have free time to explore at your own pace. As the tour draws to a close, we’ll regroup near the town entrance to relish in the breathtaking views from the village walls.
