It’s a 90 minute very bumpy ride from the port to Antigua. However, the ride is worth the trip. Our guide Moises took us through the old town at a leisurely pace. We made a few stops en route to see markets, jade jewellers and historical landmarks. The narrow cobbled streets are filled with street vendors and fresh fruit stands.
We stopped at a restaurant for a bite and a beer. It was perfect.
It’s amazing how the street view of establishments hides the inner areas and courtyards. The stores and businesses and private homes are mostly hidden behind huge wooden doors or small openings. Once you’re inside it’s amazing to see the beauty hidden in plain sight.
There’s a lot of history as well as legends and superstitions of the indigenous people. Moises was happy to share his knowledge of Mayan culture.
There were four of us (2 couples) and we travelled by private air conditioned van.
