And a Chinese cemetery prior to 1975. During the Khmer Rouge regime, it became one of the killing fields the site of the brutal executions of more than 17,000 individuals, most of whom first suffered through torture and deprivation in Toul Sleng Prison. Choeung Ek is now a group of mass graves and a memorial stupa containing thousands of skulls.

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum is the memorial site of “Security Office 21” (S-21) of Democratic Kampuchea (also known as the Khmer Rouge regime) and located in what was then the abandoned city of Phnom Penh, whose citizens had been evacuated on 17 April 1975. S-21 served as the central hub of a vast prison system throughout the country and was used throughout the period as a secret facility for the detention, interrogation, torture and extermination of those deemed “political enemies” of the regime. 120 minutes

Guide Lina was knowledgeable, friendly and very genuine. She not only brought her knowledge of what happened during the Khmer Rouge but was able to personalise the experience by sharing a deeply moving family history. Very highly recommended.

Als je in Pnom Penh bent is een bezoek aan het Genocidal Museum en de Killingsfields een vereiste. Het is een pikzwarte bladzijde in de geschiedenis die overal in Cambodja naar voren komt. Maar nergens anders dan in Pnom Penh krijg je zo’n goede indruk van de taferelen die zich gedurende deze periode hebben afgespeeld.
Wij hebben gekozen voor de privé georganiseerde toer die weliswaar duurder is maar naast efficienter ook nog veel informatiever. Onze gids vertelde veel over de geschiedenis en de oorlog. Naast een zeer goede uitleg over de afschuwelijke gebeurtenissen wees zij ook op belangrijke details. Eén daarvan was op de weg naar buiten. Waar waren zeer duidelijk onder de indruk van de de voormalige gevangenis en liepen daardoor wat in gedachten verzonken naar de uitgang. Gelukkig wees zij ons op twee oudere mannen die in de schaduw op een stoeltje zaten. Bij de bevrijding waren er nog 12 gevangenen nog levend aangetroffen. En zij waren de enige nog levenden van hen. Daar zouden wij zonder de gids aan voorbij zijn gegaan. Je voelt je overigens heel klein en nederig als je tegenover deze twee mannen staat.
Vervolgens ga je naar de killing fields. Oom hier krijg je weer uitleg over belangrijke details. Je loopt over een pad en dan wijst zij op een tand van een overledene. Waar je normaal gesproken zo aan voorbij gaat. En daarnaast per plek een goede historische uitleg.
Ik weet niet hoe een niet guided tour of ééntje met een headset zou zijn geweest maar voor ons had deze prive tour een duidelijke meerwaarde.

Emotional experience to Killing Field and S21 prison with our tour guide Mr. Sam. We got all information about the atrocities and custody during Pol Pot's regime.
Highly recommend to Sam if you want to know more information about Cambodian history.
