Explore the world's most famous amphitheater with an official guide and journey back to the days of the Roman Empire at the monumental Colosseum. Get access to areas not available to regular ticket holders, including the underground level where the wild animals were kept before they released onto the arena and where gladiators waited for their turn to fight. Learn about the innovative techniques the engineers used to build the monument and hear how it has survived for hundreds of years. Be amazed as history is brought to life as you discuss the political and social reasons for the games and events. You will also see some reconstructions of the machinery the Romans used to lift the wild animals or to create the "special effects" for the games. The ticket includes admission to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Please note this won't be a guided tour but simple admission. Hard to find the meeting point. The directions were not clear. One thing was stated on Viator, but the company didn't have us validate tickets before hand like what was stated on the directions. Communication when it came to where to go and which guide we would have was confusing. Once we finally had our official guide, he was fabulous and sweet. Informative and willing to take pictures! The company should have clearer instructions on where to meet and not needed to get their tickets before meeting the tour guide.

The tour we originally booked (which included the underground) was cancelled. Discover Rome worked with us to figure out an alternate option, so we ended up touring the arena floor. It was CRAZY busy (Holy week, spring break etc) even on a Monday morning. Giovanna did a good job navigating through the crowds and keeping our small-ish group together. She did a nice job sharing the history if the coliseum.

This tour was great! I loved seeing the Colosseum's underground areas; a guided tour seemed to be the only way to get these tickets. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, and funny. He explained things in a way that resonated with the teens on our tour. They said the largest the tour would be was 24 people, but there were only 10 people on our tour. The one critique was the meeting point. We were late and had difficulty finding the "green kiosk." It's outside the metro station but downstairs, directly across from the Colosseum entrance.
