The National Museum of Iceland's permanent exhibition, Making of a Nation - Heritage and History in Iceland, is guided by the question: What makes a nation? It provides insight into the history of the Icelandic nation from the Settlement to the present day.
The exhibition is conceived as a journey through time: it begins with the ship in which medieval settlers crossed the ocean to their new home, it ends in a modern airport, the Icelanders' gateway to the world.

Took a trip to this museum this afternoon and it was fantastic!
Well worth the entry fee, plenty to see and learn about Iceland and it's history.
Staff very helpful with any questions that we had.
Highly recommend taking a visit here!

Fantastic displays and artefacts. Lots of interactive displays as well. A lot of religious history which I wasn't expecting. It took quite a while to get around with hidden drawers to pull out, videos to watch and texts to read. You're not allowed backpacks in there so they offer free lockers on the bottom floor (with locks). There's a small, moderately priced, cafe and an overpriced gift shop too. I recommend it if you want to soak up some Icelandic history.
