Date of travel September 2022. I'm from Melbourne Australia but my background is Macedonian from what is Florina Greece today, Lerin areas Aegean Macedonia.
My guide Suzana had extensive knowledge of the history, facts, traditions & delivered the information with passion.
I was personally particularly interested in the traditional Macedonian folk costumes from various regions. The craftsmanship was incredible. Exquisite designs, luxurious fabrics & unique designs.
The building itself (Museum of Macedonia) where they are kept is run down which is a shame. Do not let that put you off. Definately suggest going to see them in person to appreciate their beauty.
The Museum of Macedonia;
1. The ethnological department, which is the one with the traditional costumes and
2. the permanent exhibition “Macedonian refugees in WWII and civil war in Greece 1940-1949”
Going to this museum was very emotional. Its focus is on the genocide, struggles & oppression of the Macedonians.
It made all the stories that my grandparents had told me growing up in Australia spring to life! Things made sense & I felt proud to be there. The grandchild of people who fled to start a new life in Australia.
Matka Canyon is gorgeous. Clear water with plenty of fish to see. A boat ride on the lake & exploring the Vrelo cave is a must! Plenty of water activities to try out too.
Suzana let me polish up my Macedonian language skills, was helpful & the whole team were friendly/easy to deal with.
I recommend 5 stars. Thank you team. I'll be back in 2023 to try other tours with you.
