Great value tour to see varied sights with a lovely informative and knowledgeable guide Rui, who gave us lots of commentary about the island's history, trades and flora. Interesting to see the changes in vegetation/crops as you get higher, and the climate difference north and south. We chose this particular tour as it included a full 2 hours at Porto Moniz, which is enough time for a swim/paddle in the rock pools and lunch. We loved the pools, and the gnarled old trees at Fanal (not misty on our visit as we were above the clouds at this point, but still beautiful). Includes a glass platform over the highest cliffs in Europe. Strict timings, but good judgement of how long to stay at each stop.
I would NOT recommend hiring a car to do your own thing at your own pace in mountainous Madeira - the roads are narrow, often 40 degrees, often single track (or modern roads going through long tunnels), no room for errors or time for decision making, would be stressful and require 100% concentration so no sight seeing for the driver, and loads of tourist cars/buses are all doing the same thing so parking would be very difficult (the guides can just pull in to a layby to pick-up/drop-off, but you couldn't do this yourself).
