If you love nature, geology and wine you will love this tour. We will introduce you to the stunning scenery that we have in Basque country full of cliffs, beaches, mountains and very rough seas. All of this gets even better when you enjoy it with a lovely glass of local white wine! In this tour we will take you to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe where the famous Game of Thrones series was set. You will be able to take the most stunning pictures as you reach the top of the hermitage surrounded by the rough ocean waters. You have a maximum of 2 hours to make it to the top and back! After the walk we will visit one of the traditional Basque txakoli wineries, the Basque local wine. You will enjoy a lovely visit to a family winery with a well-deserved wine tasting with local appetisers that will serve as lunch to finish the tour! Important notes: Please be aware that this tour requires extremely comfortable shoes (don´t bring heals, open sandals or flip-flops or you will regret it enormously)

We had an incredible time! Irene picked us up at our hotel with coffee on Sunday. She arranged a visit to a Txakoli Winery with the owner which included a tour, wine and pintxos. Then, we headed to San Juan Gaztelugatxe where we climbed to the hermitage and back! Awesome photos at the place they cal dragonstone in Game of Thrones. Highly recommend Irene as she is extremely knowledgeable on the Basque region winery -!: history.

This was a wonderful way to spend 3/4’s of a day if you are in Bilbao and want to get out of the city. Our guide Sara did a wonderful job making the whole excursion fun and engaging from beginning to end. Although the weather was bad and it was raining heavily when we left that morning somehow it stopped just long enough for us to make the trek to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and back to our vehicle. This was very good luck as the experience would not have been very nice in heavy rain. I will add that I found the walk to be only slightly challenging as someone who is used to walking several kms daily and taking the stairs. Of course for anyone not fully mobile, it would probably not be advisable as there are some steep areas that would be challenging. This is something you should talk to your guide about before you go. The winery was interesting and certainly unique in terms of it’s beautiful location up in the mountain side. It was raining when we arrived and foggy so we didn’t have the best views of the valley below but we made the best of it and had a tiny moment between shifting cloud cover where we could see the valley below. The wine tasting was good- we sampled two of the wines from the winery along with some delicious local sheep’s cheese and Pintxos.

We had a wonderful day with Sara touring the San Juan de Gaztelugatxe & The Txakoli Wine Region. Sara was very engaging, full of knowledge and history, and was very fun and accommodating. She knew a lot about wine and was helpful about providing travel tips and other recommendations. I highly recommend any tour with Sara or NSG!
