My wife and I chose to visit St Augustine, Fl, in late March of this year, selecting a rental property from AirBNB. The cottage was very close to the Historic Area of the city, within easy walking distance which served us well as parking downtown is at a premium! Suggestion? Get a rental rather than a hotel as your overall pricing, in our opinion, was more reasonable.
St Augustine proudly boasts that it is the oldest city in the USA and it is an accurate claim, being established in 1565 by the Spanish. There is a lot of history here, for those who enjoy such things, and you won’t be disappointed as the tours that cater to historical themes are well delivered and enjoyable. Among the many options available, be sure to include the Spanish Military Hospital in your itinerary! Very informative and well done.
The most impactful tour we had was the Old City Jail. What we learned there convinced us to NEVER get in trouble in Florida! A very informative and though-provoking experience, seeing what awaited a prisoner in late 19th century Florida!
Dining in a seaside city means a lot of fresh seafood, so be sure to ask for extra napkins! Our two favorite places were Harry’s Restaurant and Grille, right on San Marcos Street, and the Bull and Crown, on St George Street, right in the center of the historical area. Really great food in both places. The Bangers and Mash were superb! If you don’t know what Bangers and Mash is…come to the Bull and Crown and find out!
Of course, there’s a lot of shopping opportunities and the retailers are very friendly! You’ll enjoy wandering through the shops as you explore the Historical area. Once you have finished with the history tours, a trip over the Lions Bridge to Anastasia Island will bring to St Augustine Lighthouse, a true gem not to be missed.
