We have just returned from a 4 night trip to the Serengeti National Park - being a group of five: my husband and myself (aged 82 & 69 respectively in case you're wondering if you're too old...) our son and two grandchildren aged 11 and 14. We were picked up at the airport by our driver/guide, Sixie, and taken for the first night to the Serenity on the Lake resort. Aptly named - we loved watching the sun go down over Lake Victoria and seeing hippos for the first time. The next day was a full day safari - we were amazed to see lots of animals as soon as we got into the park - everywhere. The day was incredible - our guide was so knowledgeable and eagle eyed, spotting animals in the distance when we couldn't even see specks. We couldn't believe we got so close to lions, cheetah, giraffe and hippos. Our second night was at the Serengeti Serena - an enchanting lodge of thatched huts and wonderful views. The second day was another long one in which we saw many elephants, lions, cheetah, giraffes, hippos, a leopard, and even a python up in a tree, and the Great Migration of wildebeest, among many other fascinating creatures. Again our guide gave us so much information to enhance our experience, and we were really impressed by his driving skills. Being April and the rainy season the tracks were rutted and sometimes flooded - he was not at all worried by them and we felt totally safe. We spent two nights at the Kirawari lodge - a fascinating tented lodge all kitted out in 'old colonial' style - where we spent a rest day being looked after by lovely friendly staff and fed well before setting off back to Mwanza in time for our flight back to Dar es Salaam. The whole experience was wonderful and we wholeheartedly recommend it.
