Fabulous experience with Travel Africa Safari Agency, from initial enquiry, to booking and actually hiking! I had a week off work in March 2021 with limited destination options due to border closures, luckily Tanzania was open so decided it was time to tackle Kilimanjaro. With only 2 weeks notice, Mohamed was able to detail the perfect itinerary for me and answers all my questions in a timely fashion, whilst providing me the necessary reassurance that my hike would go ahead no matter what, even if I was the only hiker (which turned out to be the case)!
Hiking on my own was not a problem, it actually worked out to my advantage to have the whole mountain to myself. I could go at my own pace and the crew that accompanied me were also wonderful. Special thanks to my guide Benjamin for pushing me all the way to the summit when the altitude sickness started to kick in on the last day!
I hiked the Marangu route, the quickest route to the summit, which is also the only route with campsite huts. I have no issue camping in a tent, but was very grateful to be indoors away from the wind and cold on the last couple of days. Although not the norm, I was able to have my own private hut at each campsite due to lack of tourists in covid times. I recommend downloading some programmes to your phone to watch whilst acclimatizing at each campsite - there are quite a few hours to kill! In my case, I managed to watch a complete season of the crown during my 5 day hike!
Having hiked Mt Fuji and the Inca Trail previously, this was by far the hardest challenge yet - but the views are incredible and totally worth the effort to get to the top. Hang on in there on the last day! Without a doubt this experience will stay with me for life. If I was to do this again, I would probably take a longer route or spend an extra day acclimatizing at Horombo huts as the altitude really does hit hard, but it is manageable if you push through and are tight on time like me.
As a solo female traveller, I 100% recommend Travel Africa Safari Agency. Not once did I feel unsafe during my time in Tanzania, Mohamed went out of his way to make sure I was looked after at all stages of the trip - making sure I was met at the airport, that I had the right gear at the hotel, that I was still in one piece after the hike, looked after my laptop and SLR camera which I would need after the hike for safari and also arranged my PCR test in the Serengeti for my onward journey. He also took me back to Kilimanjaro airport on the final morning. Appreciate all your help! My mum was very happy to know I was in safe hands!
