Our visit to Salaam Cave in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, was an absolute highlight of our trip. This natural cave offers the rare opportunity to swim with sea turtles in their protected environment – an experience that is especially suitable for children who are good at swimming and are not afraid of animals.
What makes Salaam Cave special?
✅ Natural environment
The cave is located in Kizimkazi Dimbani and impresses with its crystal clear waters where sea turtles live in a protected environment. The ambience is unique and feels like a secret lagoon.
✅ Swimming with sea turtles
Here you have the opportunity to swim directly with the turtles, observe them and even feed them. The animals are used to humans and move relaxed through the water – a great experience for all nature lovers!
✅ Education & conservation
Salaam Cave is not only a fascinating excursion destination, but also a sanctuary for sea turtles. The guides explain a lot about their way of life, dangers from pollution and how to help protect these impressive animals.
✅ Friendly care & good organization
The staff is very welcoming and makes sure all guests feel comfortable. The tour is well organized, and care is taken to ensure that the handling of the turtles remains respectful.
Notes for visitors:
Swimming skills required: Since the water in the cave is deep, visitors should be able to swim safely. For children it is especially important that they feel comfortable in open water.
Bring your own snorkeling equipment: To enjoy the experience to the full, it may be worth having your own mask and snorkel.
Respectful handling of animals: The turtles should not be harassed or held – they move towards the visitors on their own, and rather they are still to be turned away cautiously.
Conclusion:
Visiting Salaam Cave is a unique experience that perfectly combines adventure, education and conservation. Especially for families with swimming-loving children, it is a wonderful way to experience the fascinating world of sea turtles up close. An absolute must for anyone visiting Zanzibar!
