We arrived at Attica and the temple of Poseidon (god of the sea), and one to Athena. The temple of Poseidon is up high on a rock summit and consist of an impressive grouping of standing columns up 180 ft high on a hilltop overlooking the sea.
Construction of the temple started in early 5 BC. Originally the temple also had a strong wall fortification built around the base of the hill. In 332 BC it was captured by the Macedonians, and was retaken by the Athenians in 307 BC, and back into the Macedonians hands in 263 BC and back again by the Athenians in 229; so you can see many a battle took place on this predominant point out into the Aegean sea.
The walk up to the top is easy but on our day very windy. Back down from the temple there was a big dance celebration at the restaurant.
