Khao Wang (Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park), Phetchaburi, Thailand We start our tour with a visit to the regal hillside residence of King Mongkut (King Rama IV), called Khao Wang (Palace Mountain). This iconic building can be seen on the approach to Phetchaburi, a town that has a history dating back to the eleventh century. The architectural design of the palace buildings is a unique mix of neo-classical, Thai and Chinese styles. In the nineteenth century, it became a royal retreat of King Rama IV, starting a trend of summer retreats that has been continued by his royal successors. We get the opportunity to explore the palace and enjoy the fine vista of the town, its river and the surrounding rice fields. To the west, the mountainous border of Myanmar is visible, even when the clouds blur the contours of the mountainous peaks. 90 minutes
Tham Khao Luang Cave, Phetchaburi, Thailand A highlight of this tour to the capital of Phetchaburi province is the Khao Luang (Royal Mount) Cave lies on the outskirts of the town, and this is the home of more than 170 Buddha images, some of which were placed there by King Rama IV. Around midday, they are illuminated by a natural shaft of light that floods the cave. 90 minutes
Wat Mahathat Worawihan, Phetchaburi, Thailand Finally, before we make our way back to Hua Hin / Cha-am, we stop at the Khmer-influenced temple of Wat Mahathat Worawihan, a royal temple that dates back from the 12th century and is situated along the western river banks of the Phetchaburi River. The magnificence of its architecture is something we cannot simply pass. After a short stroll through the temple complex, we head back southbound to your hotel in Hua Hin / Cha-am. 90 minutes

It takes one hour to get by car from Hua Hin to Petchaburi palace. There is a nice view from windows of the palace located on the hill and you get there by cable car. The palace itself is not particularly jaw dropping: only several sparsely furnished rooms and you cannot take pictures inside. Dress code is strictly enforced. Shoulders and knees have to be covered. If your shorts are too short guys you will, have to pull them down to cover the knees and if it is impossible you will have to rent a thin blanket for a few baht. After the palace you drive to a nearby temple which is OK. but pretty middle of the road for Thailand. The most interesting is the last attraction - the “royal cave” with countless golden Buddhas but be prepared for a 100 step walk down to the cave and then the same 100 steps up to get out. Not a huge challenge but definitely not for older or disabled people, especially on a hot, sticky day. The trip ends with a nice lunch included in your price at one of the hotels in town. Our guide was pleasant and informative. We were back in our hotel around 2 pm. Overall a nice side trip from Hua Hin once you got your fill of the beach and shopping malls in town.
