Guided tour of Tigray rock hewn churches

The places are simply amazing, impossible to describe in words. Notice that for Abuna Yemata you must not suffer from vertigo and is helpful to know basic rock climbing, although there are some guys helping you (tip is strongly suggested at the end). Haile is very nice and prepared about Orthodox theology, as all the church guides they strongly believe in what they're telling you.

I booked a 2 day Tigray churches tour via a different agency in Addis who organised the tour with Haile at Ethiopia Tigray Tours. Overall I was very impressed. Haile is very friendly and knowledgeable and was able to customise the tour to make the best use of my time. The tour itself was great - stunning views and interesting history with Daniel Korkor Church being my personal highlight. Definitely a must-see whilst in Tigray. Hailie is a passionate guide and very knowledgeable. He knows the long and incredible history of Tigray really well, and as a church deacon, is well-versed in church tradition and has good relationships with the priests of the local churches. He is very kind and was able to plan a custom programme based on our flights. I became sick shortly before travelling and he again adjusted the plan to accommodate easier visits. Unfortunately had to miss climbing to Abune Yemata church, but were still able to visit two semi-monolithic and one cave church within my abilities while ill. As two women, my friend and I felt very safe flying from Addis to Mekelle and travelling by car within the Tigray region to Axum. The driver Hailie organised was great and the vehicle in great condition for the roads. The landscapes and history are truly must-see. Hailie's itinerary allowed us to see so much in two days. We had a local guide in Axum who was also excellent. Highly recommend visiting Tigray with Hailie!
