Dai is a very knowledgeable guide and showed us a lot of Tokyo that we would have missed, providing the historical context that only a local will know! Really enjoyed the tour and can highly recommend it.

With all free walking tours, it comes down to the guides to determine quality, but after two different disappointing tours with Tokyo Localized, I would recommend looking at other alternatives. The tours I did were the Shinjuku Night Tour with Hiroshi and the Free Walking Tour in Akihabara and Euno with Reiko. In both cases, I found that both guides weren’t very fluent in English and neither had a deep enough level of historical expertise to provide meaningful insight and answers to questions beyond their typical tour script. As someone who’s done dozens of Free Walking Tours around the world, I typically find that they come with great guides who are real subject matter experts, who engage with the tour group and (most importantly) who have a level of English literacy that makes it easy for native English speakers to understand and who speak loud enough for the group to hear. These tours had none of that. And, to make matters worse, Hiroshi, like many Japanese people, was very soft spoken with a group of 30 - 40 people. While most guides would have a portable headset / speaker, he did not so in many cases I simply couldn’t hear him. Beyond that, when asked questions on most tours, the guides frequently didn’t have answers or enough historical expertise to provide true insight to the group.
Furthermore, on the tour with Hiroshi, he suggested that the average suggested contribution for a 2 hour walking tour was the equivalent of $50 USD. I guess Japan is more expensive than, for example, Latin America where I’ve given $10 USD for a Free Walking Tour and felt generous, but at the end of this tour, I almost wanted to give $0 for the level of quality (don’t worry, I didn’t!! But I still felt ripped off.)
I’d recommend skipping this company and looking for one of the dozens of other tour options while in Tokyo.
