    Bandarawela railway station is the eighth last station on the Main Line, and is 258.72 km (160.76 mi) away from Colombo. It is located 1,225.5 m (4,021 ft) above mean sea level and 8 km (5.0 mi) from Badulla, the capital city of Uva Province. All the trains that run on the Main Line, including the Podi Menike and Udarata Menike express trains stop at the station. The construction of the railway line between Haputale and Bandarawela commenced in 1887 but it wasn't until 1893 that work on the line was completed. Bandarawela was the terminus of the Main Line until the line was extended to Badulla in 1924

The station is located between Idalgashinna and Diyatalawa railway stations in Badulla District, Uva Province. It is located 247.97 km (154.08 mi) from Colombo Fort railway station at an elevation of 1,479.57 m (4,854.2 ft) above sea level. The station has one platform with a siding and all the trains that operate on the line stop at the station. The station opened on 19 June 1893, following the extension of the main line from Nanu Oya railway station to Haputale. In 1894 the rail line was extended from Haputale to Banderawela.

    Idalgashinna Railway Station is the 68th station on the Main Line, located between Haputale and Ohiya railway stations in Badulla District, Uva Province. It is located 8 km (5.0 mi) west of Haputale, at an elevation of 1,615 metres (5,299 ft) above sea level. The station was built after the track was extended in 1893, from the Nanu Oya railway station to Haputale. The 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) broad gauge main line between Haputale and Idalgashinna is regarded to have a notably scenic view due to the land falling away steeply both sides. The view on the northern side of the station extends beyond Boralanda and Welimada up to Udupussellawa and Hakgala, with the southern side encompassing Beragala down to the coast at Hambantota and the Udawalawa reservoir clearly visible. It is serviced by the express trains such as Podi Menike, Udarata Menike and Night mail train, as well as all local trains running on the main line. There are 14 tunnels between the Ohiya and Idalgashinna railway stations.

    The Nanu Oya railway station is the 63rd station on the Main Line, and is 206.9 km (128.6 mi) away from Colombo. All trains including Podi Menike and Udarata Menike express trains service the station. The station was a junction and branching point for the Udupussallawa narrow gauge railway line connecting Nanu Oya with Ragala via Nuwara Eliya. The original train station was built in 1885 as the terminus of the main line, as part of the 31 km (19 mi) rail line connecting Hatton to Nanu Oya.In 1893 the railway line was extended from Nanu Oya to Bandarawela and in 1903 the station became a junction station when Udupussallawa railway line was constructed. In 1948 the government decided to close the Udapussellawa railway due to low traffic and the tracks were completely removed.

  • Hatton Railway Station, Hatton, Sri Lanka
    Hatton Station is a railway station on the Main (Colombo-Badulla) railway line in Sri Lanka. It is situated between Rozella and Kotagala railway stations. It is 173.06 kilometres (107.53 mi) along the railway line from the Colombo Fort Railway Station at an elevation of about 1,262.5 m (4,142 ft) above sea level. The Hatton railway station was opened on 4 June 1884 when the main line was extended from Nawalapitiya to Hatton. The station was the terminus of the main line until the line was extended to Nanu-Oya on 20 May 1885. The station has a reservation and train enquiry section, ticket office, cloak room, waiting hall, book stall, tea stall, toilet blocks and catering area together with a public car parking area. The railway station has four platforms but normally only three of the platforms serve rail passengers. Platform No. 1 caters for trains to Badulla that come from Colombo Fort or Kandy whilst platform No. 2 is used for down trains which is to Nawalapitiya, Kandy, and to Colombo Fort that trains come from Badulla or Haputale. All trains that run on the main line stop at Hatton and the station handles a total of twelve trains daily. Hatton railway station is the busiest railway station in the Nuwara Eliya District and the second-busiest railway station in the Central Province. Approximately 1 million passengers use the station during the pilgrimage period to Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) (which begins in December and ends in May). The station provides a large waiting room, located outside of the station, especially for visitors/pilgrims to Adams Peak. This facility is only open during the pilgrimage season. The Sri Lanka Transport Board also manages a joint railway-bus service for pilgrims.

What a journey! Took the train (tourists and locals on board) from Ella to Nuwara Eliya - reserved seats booked by our Tour Agency from Ella Excursions Tours. Amazing journey through delightful scenery up into the hills through tea plantation country. Great photo opportunities from the open windows or for the more adventurous from the open carriage doors! Saw Sri Lankan life carrying on as the train made its leisurely way through various villages/towns. A fabulous experience and a must-do when visiting Sri Lanka. Very cheap and highly recommended.

Thought we would try this for the peace of mind as was one of our must do,s We got our 1st class train tickets the evening before and as it was independence day we had to get it from a station 40 minutes from our hotel. We were picked up in the morning and taken to the station free of charge. We got everything we requested. Right side of train Window side seat The whole train trip was fantastic and thanks so much for going the extra mile. Thank you again. Ella excursions tours is great company in Sri Lanka..
