This review may be influenced by the fact that it was not a very hot day and I was travelling solo. Nevertheless, I’ll go into detail as it’s the beginning of the season and maybe lessons may be learnt.
Pick up and drop off we’re good - on time and not much waiting about (at least for me).WhatsApp communication to arrange pick up was also good. The driver had minimal English but stopped for a couple of photo opportunities en route.
There was plenty of space on the boat and good music so an enjoyable ride.
The first half of the trip was extremely grey - grey denuded mountains and grey water. We stopped for fishing (too cold for swimming) but I didn’t see anyone catch anything.
Then we went for lunch. The restaurant seemed to be undergoing renovation for the beginning of the season but the meal was efficiently served and was simple but very good. I had the whole fish grilled from their barbecue with salad and rice. The toilets looked new and were very clean and well equipped. But be warned, there are 122 steep steps up to the restaurant followed by more up to the toilets.
Back down the steps and onto the boat. At last we came to the green waters. This was all very beautiful and I was happy to be there, especially when we saw eagles and mountain goats.
So why the 3/5 score? Mainly it was the lack of guidance.
The charming and helpful captain introduced himself. The guide never did. I wondered at times if we had one. He did give clear instructions about how long the lunch stop was, and did help people with the fishing gear. But that was it. NO information from him about what we were seeing, eg why the water was green; the use of the dam, the trees the birds, the rocks etc. Perhaps it was a language thing, and he didn’t speak Russian? But he made no efforts to interact with or inform passengers. The third guy did because he was the photographer- he must have approached and encouraged everyone onboard except me as the sole solo traveler. Many people bought the photos so they must have been good and many were on plates so it’s probably something worth doing, but he made it clear there was no obligation to buy.
So, thank you for organizing this trip! It was quite enjoyable but could have been better with more interaction from the guide. If there’s a language problem I suggest you make laminated cards in at least English,German and Russian and post them around the boat.
Finally, please take warm clothing and insect repellent- there were lots of pesky bugs around.
