Coimbra, a city on the river in the centre of Portugal and the country's former capital, houses a preserved medieval old city and the historic University of Coimbra. Built on the site of an ancient palace, the University is famous for its Baroque library, the Joanina Library, and its 18th-century bell tower. In the old town is the Romanesque cathedral of the 12th century, the Sé Velha.

We wanted to see and learn about the university, and we hired our private guide Filipe. The grounds are beautiful by any standards, but if you want to understand the real history of the place, Filipe is the right person. He graduated from here, and loved the subject of the school and its history, and conveyed that interest to us. I would highly recommend this tour if you want to not just see the beautify of its architecture but understand the university as well.
