The knowledge of our guide, Keaton, was invaluable, and made the experience a real education. He is very personable, and it was fun to spend the day with him.

We hoped for an overview of the history and geology of the Canyon.
What we got was Lae - a mountain woman with incredible knowledge and deep love of this countryside. She described the changing fauna as we drove towards the canyon and pointed out herd of elk, antelopes and wild horses along the way. Then she told us the history of the Canyon as far as original American Indian tribes plus the encroaching settlers and the importance of the Santa Fe Railroad. She shared information about the scarcity of water, the winds and wind corridors, census report statistics, average temperatures and snowfall.
And of great importance, Lea kept us posted on the proximity of restrooms along with restroom reviews!
The owner of Canyon Dave Tours is Dave, retired as a geologist for the Grand Canyon National Park. His wife and co-owner is a retired botanist also for Park. They have put together a professional staff of educated individuals with a love of the Park and a deep knowledge of the geology (past and present) along with info on the importance and use of different fauna. Each guide goes through an intense training period so they understand the makeup of the park geology and history.
Lae knows the trails, the mountains, the river and the best spots for viewing (without the crowds) at the overlooks. She pointed out architectural features of Bright Angel Lodge and the Lookout Tower. Shared the inside scoop about the Kolb Brothers photography studio and their loggerheads with the national park system along with their incredible photo business which included fanciful portraits of travelers riding their mules down the trail towards the bottom of the park (they took portraits at rim) then ran 9 miles to the bottom to process photos because the water was available there and then, ran BACK up the trails to have the photo ready for their clients. A wealth of daring and intrepid individuals developed the Canyon as it is today and Lae has stories about many, many of them.
Besides an obvious love of the area, Lae has a great sense of humor and infectious laugh.
Our tour was so much more than we expected. If you want a tour with individual treatment and great learning experiences, then contact
Canyon Dave Tours. And do request Lae. Tell her that Panama Pam sent you!

Our tour guide, Keaton was excellent. He was prompt on pickup, interested in what we wanted to get from the tour, and how he could meet our expectations. His knowledge of The Canyon, from hiking extensively in many areas, leading tours for 7-8 years, his studied knowledge of geology and history dovetailed everything into a comprehensive tour.
He was aware of all our needs, water, van comfort, and restroom breaks. We never had a need or question that was not addressed immediately and with pleasure. Would book with them for another tour if needed.
