Vatican City, Vatican City, Italy Vatican City, officially the Vatican City State is an independent city-state and enclave located within Rome, Italy. The Vatican City State, also known simply as the Vatican, became independent from Italy with the Lateran Treaty (1929), and it is a distinct territory under "full ownership, exclusive dominion, and sovereign authority and jurisdiction" of the Holy See, itself a sovereign entity of international law, which maintains the city state's temporal, diplomatic, and spiritual independence. With an area of 49 hectares (121 acres) and a population of about 825, it is the smallest state in the world by both area and population. As governed by the Holy See, the Vatican City State is an ecclesiastical or sacerdotal-monarchical state ruled by the pope who is the bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church. The highest state functionaries are all Catholic clergy of various national origins.

Stanze di Raffaello, Vatican City, Italy Raphael’s Rooms comprise four separate rooms in the Palace of the Vatican and they formed a part of the apartment of Pope Julius II (pontiff from 1503-1513). The walls of each room are beautiful with their immense frescoes that depict a variety of religious and mythological stories. Named after the master Raphael, these rooms were designed by Raphael himself. While a large number of the artworks were painted by Raphael, many of them needed to be completed by the students of the School of Raphael, due to the artist’s unexpected death in 1520 before the completion of the rooms. The inner walls and ceilings are a symphony of exquisite artworks, each alluding to a significant aspect of the Christian faith.

This was my first time visiting the Vatican, and I feel if we had done visited without a guide I would have been overwhelmed and not sure where to start. Our guide not only help us hit all the highlights in a timely manner, she provided us with a thorough background of the history and significance of everything we saw. I highly recommend this tour.
