The best way to ride in Florence and surrounding hills? With a vintage "motocarrozzetta" (motorcycle sidecar), no doubt. It's the only way to experience the Oltrarno area, Michelangelo square and terrace, San Miniato church and hills behind it, including Arcetri where Galileo Galilei spent his last years in Florence.
Perfect to take videos and pictures of the hidden corners of the city and from the panoramic points. Much more comfortable and safe than a scooter, enjoying the breeze not being in a car or minivan!
The best way to catch both sides of the city: it's old districts (i.e. San Niccolò, the bohemian one...) and the countryside landscape around it.
Our personal suggestion is to book it for your first day in Florence, so to have a complete introduction to it...
VERY IMPORTANT: please remember that we ride old vintage motorcycles sidecar and we might refuse bookings due to weight limit.

Gilberto was our guide and driver. Cool as a cat yet provided a rich history of another side of a Florence out of the general tourist wave.
The sidecar a classic.. the sights - the beauty of Florence.
End up at the Culinaria restaurant.. a gem of its own.

My good friend and I were fortunate enough to book two tours through De Gustibus. Italy sells itself with its fine wine and exquisite cuisine. What made the tours exceptional for us, was our guide, Gilberto. He was patient and thoughtful, honest and funny. He added key information to our experience, but then also knew when to just let us be to create our own memories.
The first tour we took was the sidecar motorcycle tour. This is such a unique experience, I encourage anyone to take advantage of this. Let me stress how safe our driver was and overall how thoughtful he was in planning our route. He drove at an easy speed and took us to a part of Florence that was less touristy and gave us insight to the everyday modern culture of the city. We, of course, stopped at the Michael Angelo Square with its magnificent look out and Gilberto gave us information about the Medici famiy and their influence on the town. My friend and I were a handful with our laughs and enthusiasm for the ride on the bike, but our driver did not seem to mind. We were so grateful for that. This tour was such a fun one.
The following day we took the Chianti wine tour which seems to be perfectly described in some of the other reviews. Wonderful experience with Tuscany and its people. Gilberto again, took care to allow us to experience his country in a way that suit our personal needs. We will not forget this trip to Firenze. In fact, we are only wondering when the next time will be.

We met Riccardo at Piazza Ognissanti and he dropped us off at our hotel afterwards. He drove us through the hills southeast of Florence and on into Chianti. It was absolutely beautiful. We took turns on the seat behind Riccardo and the sidecar. So fun! I have been to Florence five times and this was the best thing I have done. Riccardo was great. We never felt unsafe. Thanks, Riccardo, for a wonderful morning!
