* Starting February 2025, tour is offered the second Saturday of the month at 4pm. This amazing walking tour will take you on a journey to an era in which U Street NW DC was the center of African American music and intellectualism. The sounds of jazz was everywhere, Langston Hughes and Jean Toomer were being established as the future writers of the day, and an effort to document the history of African Americans was underway. Take a journey through the Harlem Renaissance as it started in DC! Tour stops mid-way at the famous Ben's Chili Bowl, for optional refreshments and a bathroom break.

I throughly loved this tour! The guide is enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and a great storyteller. Having lived in the area for a few months, I learned about buildings and venues that I pass by so frequently never having known the history of them before. I’ve continued to think about this tour - the pool halls, Elaine Locke, the underground late night jazz spots. It was so educational and rich. Excited to go on more tours with Off the Mall.

A hidden gem of DC more people need to know about. Whether you’re a history buff (like me :-) or just into discovering the beauty of the city on foot with good company and and a great tour guide - this is it. I took the Harlem Renaissance in DC tour and loved the route, information & curation - the guide dressed in beautiful 1920s regalia only added to energy. I take my fun & my facts very seriously; if you want the real DC (Chocolate City, home of Go-Go & Hard-Core Punk, Civil Rights, the shadows of global power and more), stay off the mall & take this tour!

This was a great experience! The walking and seeing the actual place where the artist performed made the experience upfront and real. Katie, our tour guide is an awesome commentator and very knowledgeable. The stop by Ben’s Chili bowl was phenomenal. I would recommend this tour to friends and family.
