The park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir.

The afternoon safari with Gimhana was a fantastic experience. He explained a lot about the animals and took the time to answer our questions thoroughly. I especially like his special eye for other animals, such as birds and chameleons, which we would never have seen on our own. This demonstrates his extensive experience. It was very interesting and fun. Thank you, Gimhana!

We did a four-hour afternoon safari with Gimhana, and it was fantastic. Scheduling the safari in advance via WhatsApp worked out perfectly, and Gimhana arrived at the meeting point on time. Gimhana is super friendly, took his time, and explained a lot about the animals and the national park during the safari. This meant we didn't just stop for photos, but were able to really observe the animals. He had eagle eyes and saw every single animal. We're very glad we did the safari with Gimhana, as we didn't follow the crowd and were often completely alone. We highly recommend the safari and would do it again with Gimhana anytime. Thank you so much ☺️????????

My husband and I are still in awe as we reflect on the wonderful safari and our outstanding guide, Gimhana!!! He was most knowledgeable of all of the wildlife, very patient, ensuring that we got to see everything regarding our safari, and he was most professional and kind. We are very happy that we were able to see so many animals along the way, as well.
