The park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir.

We had a great safari experience with Gimhana! He was polite, prompt, knowledgeable and welcoming. He showed up on time, and drove as smoothly as one can on the bumpy park roads. He spent as much time as you wanted with any animal. We saw many elephants, birds, water buffalo and crocodiles. He even helped us arrange taxis before and after our safaris, which was a huge help. We would definitely recommend a safari with Gimhana, you will be in great hands!
