It is the oldest building in stone town. lt is located on the main seafront, adjacent to another landmark building of the city the House of wonders (the former palace of the Sultan) and facing the Fordhani Gardens.

The market was closed on the orders of the Sultan in 1873.

I had a wonderful time on my walking tour of stone town. Hassan is very knowledgeable about the history of Stone Town and Zanzibar. He is also a great story teller so he keeps you engaged and entertained. As a solo traveler he assured my safety which I appreciate. He made sure we seen all of the major historical places. I had a great time.
