Your host Putu will pick you up in the early morning and drive you to the Pejeng market, bursting with locals shopping. Putu will introduce you to the seasonal fruits, vegetables and spices on offer, and you’ll pick up a few ingredients for your upcoming cooking lesson. The market offers wonderful photo opportunities, so don't forget to bring your camera! Back home, you'll work together to prepare 2-3 authentic Balinese dishes. As you chop, grind and grill Putu will teach you about the spices she uses in her family recipes as well as the medicinal qualities of Balinese ingredients. Putu's kitchen is simple, with only a two burner cooktop, and you'll be impressed by the speed and fluidity with which she can prepare a complex menu with multiple dishes. Potential dishes could be Putu’s grilled eggplant with tomato, grilled fish with Balinese sambal (chili sauce), or a curry dish. The cooking lesson will last about 1-2 hours before you sit down and enjoy the meal.

We had a fantastic time with Putu today. She gave us a wonderful tour of her local market and explained all the ingredients and things on offer. We were able to ask lots of questions and Putu was so knowledgeable. Her home is gorgeous, she explained all about the different aspects of Balinese life and culture. The cooking class was so hands on. I do plenty of Asian cooking at home but even I learnt several new things to take back with me to improve my skills. I would highly highly recommend to anyone looking for an authentic cooking class and/or market tour to join with Putu!

My partner and I had a delightful morning with our host, Putu, at her cooking experience. The market visit was well worth while, where Putu showed us many of the local foods and explained how they are used in Indonesian cooking. She even brought us some freshly prepared food and fruit at the market for us to sample. At her home we had a wonderful time visiting her family temple and garden, and of course preparing a variety of Indonesian dishes that we later feasted on until we could eat no more. Her outdoor covered cooking area is clean and spacious and efficiently run. Putu is very knowledgeable and friendly, answered all our questions and gently guided us through the food preparation and cooking processes. We highly recommend this cooking adventure with Putu and her family.

My wife and I did this on our honeymoon and I will say it is one of the highlights of our trip. Our guide Putu was amazing. She took us around the markets and helped us cook the best meal we had on our trip. This tour is great way to get an authentic look at day to day life in Ubud.
