Based on some miscommunication, we did not get to attend this tour. Alex was due to reach out to us 2-3 days before the experience (he tells you this upon booking). However, he did not contact us until 1PM the day before, via Trip Advisor, to ask for my email address so he could provide meet-up instructions. I didn’t see his note immediately — we were traveling Greece, clearly — so he then sent another email at 7 PM, in which he told me he needed my email address to contact me and hadn’t been able to reach me, so he was going to cancel the tour if I didn’t respond. It was confusing that he didn’t contact us at the time he said he would, which I initially thought nothing of, and then was communicating with us via trip advisor to tell us he couldn’t get ahold of us. Why did he need my email to send me instructions when he clearly knew he could send instructions on trip advisor? It all felt very rushed and strange.
I called him immediately upon seeing his notes to confirm we wanted to attend and to please send me meet up instructions. He did. However, as soon as he did, I immediately realized I somehow missed that you have to provide your own transportation to the excursion. I immediately called Alex back twice and sent an email as well to let him know with my sincere apologies that we’d have to cancel. He waited until two days later to acknowledge my outreach, and then said he would not refund us because he had already had his mom cook for us. He said he “waited around for us all day” — which was very silly, given if he had done his part and contacted us on time, all of this could have been avoided. Giving someone six hours to respond during their vacation before pushily following up was also rude.
I don’t see how he could have missed all of my attempts to reach him immediately upon hanging up, but nonetheless, I asked if we could meet in the middle and be refunded less the cost of his time and expenses. I felt he was partially responsible for the mix-up, given he did not contact us a few days before the event as he said he would — had he done that, we would have been within the cancelation window upon realizing the distance to the excursion. He then never responded again even after I sent a follow up.
I hate to leave a negative review, but I felt taken advantage of with the lack of accountability on Alex’s part and blame-shifting everything to me when it was him who was behind in his outreach — which ultimately cost us our refund. I understand he may have been behind — everyone makes mistakes — but I didn’t appreciate that he acted very frustrated toward me without taking any responsibility himself.
My advice for future clients is to reach out to Alex if he hasn’t contacted you a few days prior so that you can confirm meet-up details. I wouldn’t book with him again — not based on the mistake, but based on the way he interacted with us.
