With over 30 rooms on show, visitors can immerse themselves in life as far back as the 16th century when Grace O’Malley the Pirate Queen of Connacht ruled the land and seas around the estate. Built upon the foundations of one of her many castles which can still be toured in the dungeons today, the original Westport House was built in 1650 by Colonel John Browne and his wife Maud Burke, Grace O’Malley’s great-great-granddaughter.
Since then it has undergone a number of developments under the direction of the celebrated architects Richard Cassels (of Carton and Leinster House architectural fame), James Wyatt and Thomas Ivory, progressing from a smaller, one room deep residence with a central open court yard to the stately square house complete with beautiful balustraded terraces that we recognise today.

A lovely historical estate a lovely stroll away from the downtown area. The grounds are breath taking and the house is a sight to behold. You can do a self guided tour or be escorted by one of their knowledgeable guides. Learn about Grace O’Malley- the Pirate Queen and the history of Westport.
There are a number of activities right on the property suitable for all the family; paddle boats, adventure park and a train however we just did the house and grounds.

I had used Tripadvisor ahead of our visit to Mayo to find things to do if it were raining. Westport House with the Interactive Gaming zone was high on the list. We have visited similar activities at home in Manchester, but this one was better by far since it involved kicking and throwing a ball to play the games (which you could play as many of as you liked within the hour unlike the games in Manchester). There had been confusion over bookings the day before so the management offered us a reduction as a goodwill gesture - which was gratefully received. The activities wore out our lively 10 year-old and we also had a great time. The table football/Jenga & Air Hockey on offer in the waiting area were also a hit. We definitely plan to return during the next school holidays and imagine booking early would be a necessity as this is sure to be a winner. Looking forward to taking advantage of the rest of the activities that Westport House has to offer during the summer season. Thanks for a great afternoon!

Westport House must rate as THE best historical house to visit in Ireland. With over 30 rooms to view including basement kitchens and dungeons, there was plenty to see. There were lots of information boards to read giving historical details. Staff were very friendly and informative. Some rooms were undergoing refurbishment/conservation, yet were still open for viewing. For example, some rooms had walls partially stripped back or removed, giving a look at the construction of the house. NT in Northern Ireland please take note - this is a marvelous example of how an historic house should be managed for public viewing. I would definitely recommend a visit to Westport House. Best wishes for 2025 when it is planned that the house will be closed for over a year, for major renovation/preservation work. I look forward to a return visit to see what has been done.
