We took the opportunity to visit Westport House before it closes for a 3 year renovation in September. We were so glad we did as it was fantastic. John was our guide and he gave an informative and entertaining tour of the house, providing context and insight that you otherwise would not get. The tour brought us back to when Grace O'Malley was taking no prisoners, except when she did and held them in the dungeons under Westport House. The history of the Browne family is fascinating, a fair account of a long line of ancestors tells of the positives and negatives associated with landlords in Ireland. The house is currently being renovated by its new owners, the local Hughes family, who are doing Westport and Ireland a huge service by preserving this culturally important landmark for future generations. We can't wait to come back in 2028 for it's post renovation reopening.
