In Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods of Mouraria and Graça, where scenic little streets spread out, web-like, in the shadows of St. George Castle, the smell of change (and, of course, garlic) is in the air. Though a long neglected corner of the city, these days many old buildings are rapidly being renewed here, new communities are sinking roots and new restaurants are opening, challenging the stodgy and rough identity that the area is famous for. After all, this is where fado – Lisbon’s trademark musical style – was born in seedy 19th century taverns. Here is one of the bastions of the annual St. Anthony celebrations, where sardines are grilled on street corners. Here also is an incredibly diverse population of old locals, new immigrants and Portuguese bohemians living as neighbors. Here can be found the flavors so integral to the city’s traditions – right alongside delicious evidence that this place is in a state of transition.

We spent 3 days in Lisbon and this was the highlight of our time there! Our guide Kika was extremely friendly and knowledgeable . She described with such a passion and depth not only the history of the areas we were visiting, but also the complex history of food we were able to sample. Being able to taste the food gave the experience a whole new dimension. She took us to places we never would’ve found on our own, and not only was the food at each and every place delicious, the restaurant owners and workers were very welcoming and friendly . I would do this tour over and over again if possible! Lots of walking and eating…what could be better?!? It was also wonderful to see Kika’s face light up as she described with such pride, the rich and ancient history of her beautiful city. This tour is a must for anyone who loves history, authentic Portuguese food, and exploring!

You can’t do better than a stroll through Lisbon with Irene. She is knowledgeable about food, of course, but also about history and social customs and habits. We had a full afternoon sampling wonderful Portuguese dishes of cockles, sausage, fish and even a Goan dessert with chai latte! She followed up this great day with a text to us all answering a question we had the day before! We walked, we climbed, we ate, we drank, we walked some more. We ended high above the city watching the lights over Lisbon. Thoroughly satisfied!

Our tour with Irene was beyond our high expectations. Such a personable and knowledgeable guide in the world of Portuguese food and cuisine -- as well as Lisbon in general. It was a memorable day and a highlight of out trip. We look forward to a return visit and another tour with her.
