Carlos was a wonderful tour guide to our small group of 10. He was knowledgeable and humorous, and hit all of the major highlights available to public view. I’d recommend this tour rather than just wandering around without historical context, unless you’ve done a lot of advance research on your own and know what to look for.

If you're going anyways, being in an organized tour group seems like the better option. There's a separate security entrance and when going through several rooms the groups walk on a separate route from self-guided visitors. We also wore a small amplification ear piece to be able to hear our guide. This tour is full of art, architecture, and Spanish history.
The downside is that there are so very many people that I needed my ear piece turned to the highest volume. Our guide was sweet, but hasn't traveled at all (even to the south is Spain) and English was spoken with a thick accent (husband and kids didn't realize she was saying "clocks" until about half-way through and felt like they were missing the "cloaks" they thought they were supposed to see). The Cathedral next door is free and we went through on our own as recommended by our guide.
Something to do, but overall, could do without this tour unless you're really into Spanish royalty and quick walk-by glimpses of art.
