    The Portuguese legacy of Bengal is still palpable in the heart of Kolkata, but sadly, it is overlooked and not paid the respect it deserves. Astonishing as it may sound, an attempt to murder, or at least a street fracas between two Europeans in colonial Calcutta, indirectly gifted this city a huge edifice — the Portuguese Church of the Sacred Heart of the Jesus. In Calcutta, 1821, near Old Chowringhee Theatre, a man named Luis De Souza openly fired inside a horse carriage, seriously injuring one Joseph Gonsalves. De Souza was arrested and an attempt to murder case was filed against him. Hearing this, his mother began praying for his life and made a resolution to build a church if her prayers were answered. Her son escaped capital punishment, but was imprisoned for a decade. After De Souza was released, she laid the first stone of the church on February 12, 1832. The church was completed in two years and its consecration was held on Easter Sunday, March 30, 1834.

Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the South Indian Deccani Kingdom of Mysore, was engaged in a series of wars with the British East India Company. After the last war, with Tipu's death on the battlefield and six years after Tipu's death, the entire family was exiled to Calcutta by the British Government. During that period the capital of Mysore Srirangapatnam was captured by British Army. Son of Tipu Sultan, Gholam Mohammed was a child when arrived in Calcutta. He was a man of varied qualities.

Great Experience. The only city in Asia with more than 100 years old tram service. The trams are old, but, still, work. We were offered free pick up and drop. The guide was polite.

Very well organised tour. The guide was very polite and educated us about the heritage of Kolkata. We got complimentary photo prints and Tram Tour Badges.

The trip was cancelled by the tour operator due to some operational issues buty entire amount for 2 people was deducted and I have not received a discount till date. The person who had reached out claims that he is neither from trip advisor not from viator ( the operator) do he can only follow up and not refund. The contact number provided in the listing is fake and leads to a wrong number. Trip advisor has no helpline number and even their social media handles don't respond. I would recommend not booking via this app or this trip as it is not reliable.
