We found this a great way to spend a day in Kent. Our guide Nick was high-energy, very knowledgeable, considerate and funny. He enlivened the drive out of London with a wealth of information about the areas we were passing through, and then segued to Kent and the places we visited. In Canterbury he offered an optional walk around the town — also very interesting. Nick has degrees in history and spoke knowledgeably about every period, plus music, literature and a lot more besides.
At Dover Castle we skipped the tunnels and instead climbed the tower, toured the church and walked the battlements. Great views in every direction.
In the Cathedral, we followed the printed self-guided walking tour, and found that the Cathedral volunteers were helpful in answering questions.
N.B. We had arranged to bring our luggage with us. Instead of returning to London, we had booked a hotel in Canterbury. This was a nice way to get to the area instead of via train.
