The cooking class with Nuno was the highlight of our week in Porto.
The experience began with a visit to local shops — the butcher, baker, confectioner, and green grocer — to handpick fresh ingredients for the day’s recipes. This immersive start set the perfect tone for what turned out to be a truly memorable afternoon.
Nuno’s apartment was warmly welcoming and well-suited for our group. A charming balcony overflowing with fresh herbs and plants — many of which we used in our cooking — added to the atmosphere. Despite being a somewhat tricky group, with dietary restrictions including shellfish allergies, a no-beef preference, and a few picky eaters, Nuno adapted with ease and enthusiasm. He helped us craft a delicious, hearty meal that everyone could enjoy.
Under his guidance, each participant took on a specific role, making the experience hands-on and engaging from start to finish. We prepared a range of appetizers, including different sausages, green peppers, pork strips, and a fresh fish we cleaned and baked with lemongrass, rosemary, tomatoes, and olives — all beautifully paired with a crisp white wine.
We wrapped up the meal with a surprisingly simple-to-make Pastel de Nata, Portugal’s iconic custard tart. Beyond the food, Nuno was a fantastic host — knowledgeable, funny, and passionate about both Portuguese cuisine and his own culinary journey.
By the end of the afternoon, it felt less like a cooking class and more like sharing a long, joyful lunch with a good friend.
