  • National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War, Kyiv, Ukraine
    There was a time when Babi Yar was just a deep ravine on the outskirts of Kiev. Occupying German forces changed all that September 1941 when they ordered 35000 of Kiev’s Jewish residents to gather their belongings and march to Babi Yar. Thinking they would be transported to another location, they did as they were told lined up along the ravine where Nazi firing squads proceeded to execute them. Their bodies were thrown into the ravine below. Throughout the Nazi occupation of Kiev, Babi Yar was used for mass killings. In all, over 100000 people including partisans and members of the underground, but mostly Jews, were killed here. In 1991, a monument was erected near the site. The tour was well organised as we first had a guide, a driver and car to take us to the Barbi Jar Ravine and from there we continued to the museum. Doing this alone would have been much more complicated. We were exceedingly satisfied with our guide with the way she gave us information on both places. We can reccommend this tour!

Really interesting tour. Guide is so knowledgeable and very easy to get on with. The war museum is incredible. The way the history is laid out and presented makes it very easy to understand as you move from room to room and floor to floor. The Babiy Yar Memorial is worth seeing even though it sadly brings home the darkest times in history. I had the tour by car option. The driver was very good.Traffic in Kiev is a nightmare and he did a good job getting through the jams. For me, this was great. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a interesting and memorable time.
