Did the Manhattan Food Tour/Hell’s Kitchen food tour yesterday with Jake. I’ve done a lot of food tours and this was one of the better ones, especially from a food point of view. The food was interesting and delicious and very filling, with full sized portions rather than just tastes (like I got last week on a food tour in Brooklyn). They say to come hungry and that’s good advice.
The first stop was a Japanese BBQ place, where we grilled our own food which was fun. Our tour had 3 people plus Jake. The other two people grilled different cuts of beef whereas I cooked a medley of mushrooms as I don’t eat beef. Three different sauces to try meant different flavors.
Next stop was a very tasty cookie place.
For me, the highlight was the next place, where we had a chicken tikka masala taco… delicious.
The 4th place was the most unusual, and it was a delight to try something I hadn’t eaten before. It was a Georgian place (the country, not the state) and we had a “cheese boat” which is just what it sounds like with the “boat” being made of bread. It was very dramatic with an egg yolk and some butter being added at the table to the fresh-out-of-the-oven cheese boat. It was really tasty although very rich and filling. It was served with an interesting and refreshing Georgian lemonade, that doesn’t actually have lemons in it but tastes more of anise/licorice.
Last stop was a meatball place…very good meatballs and particularly delicious cauliflower.
Throughout the stroll between places, Jake told stories of the neighborhood and its history which added to the fun.
Highly recommend.
